Da Vinci the Inventor

Not Just an Artist

A Brilliant Man

Leonardo Da Vinci was accomplished in several areas.  He studied scientific areas such as anatomy, astronomy, and botany.  He would dissect dead human bodies to observe and draw their anatomy.  This helped him draw humans in his artwork.  Once, he constructed a beautiful show in which his models of planets, the sun, and moon were displayed.  The amazing man studied nature and plants (botany)  to help draw it as well.  He was also an artist.  He was hired as a painter, sculptor, architect, and musician. He played the lyre and designed the ideal city.  He also was a mathematician, engineer, writer, and inventor.   Basically, this man did it all.  Not only do we know it now, but they knew it then.  People were constantly asking him to do their portraits.  He was and still is very famous.

Lots of Notebooks

Mr. Da Vinci  sketched ideas for future paintings, architecture, and inventions in numerous notebooks.  He would write in code or backwards so he could he could keep his ideas private.  Invention designs found in these notebooks include a parachute, hand flippers, floats for walking on water, the flying machine, and others.  Many of his designs were never constructed.  Later, people were inspired by his designs to invent things similar.  Sources say that even though Da Vinci's floats can't be used to walk on water, they are similar to the modern water skis.  Some of his designs never worked, such as the flying machine.  Many of these priceless notebooks are lost forever.

Too Busy to Finish

Leonardo Da Vinci took things slow.  He loved to observe, study, and plan before beginning a project.  By the time he started, he would have too many ideas to focus on one thing.  He would have worked on it so long that he would get bored and leave it unfinished.  Research says that he spent six years or more on the Last Supper, one of the most famous paintings in the world.  Usually it only happened with paintings.  He felt they were too easy for him.  He had to many talents to do nothing but paint, so he spent his time on things more important - his inventions.
